Native American Quotes

Photo of Floyd Red Crow Westerman

“Man sometimes thinks he’s been elevated to be the controller, the ruler, but he’s not. He’s only part of the whole. Man’s job is not to exploit, but to oversee, to be a steward. Man has responsibility, not power.”

~ Oren Lyons ~ Faithkeeper

"There is hope if people will begin to awaken that spiritual part of themselves...that heartfelt knowledge that we are caretakers of this planet."

~ Brooke Medicine Eagle

The faces of our future generations are looking up to us from the earth and we step with great care not to disturb our grandchildren.

~Traditional Circle of Elders

Lumbee elder Vernon Cooper says “Everything I know I learned by listening and watching. Nowadays people learn out of books instead. Doctors study what man has learned. I pray to understand what man has forgotten”.

Oh Great Spirit

Let your voice whisper righteousness in our ears through the East Wind at the break of day.

Let us be blessed with love for all our brothers & sisters on Earth so we may truly live in peace.

Let us have good health mentally & physically to solve our problems and accomplish something for future generations.

Let us be sincere to ourselves and make the world a better place to live.

~Aho Mitakuye Oyasin All My Relations

Liberation From Self: Humanities Survival

Albert Einstein Quote

A human being is part of the whole called by us universe, a part limited in time and space. We experience ourselves, our thoughts and feelings as something separate from the rest. A kind of optical delusion of consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from the prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty. The true value of a human being is determined by the measure and the sense in which they have obtained liberation from the self. We shall require a substantially new manner of thinking if humanity is to survive.

(Albert Einstein, 1954)

Thoughts & Feelings of Being Inferior or Superior to Others

By Pamela J. Wells

Thoughts and feelings of being less than or more than, inferior or superior, are an illusion that the mind creates. The mind creates meaning out of the meaningless, value out of the valueless and when we think we are not meeting some standard of an idea or notion or that we are exceeding it, then we either feel bad about ourselves or we feel proud of ourselves. Either way, it is not real. It is just the imagination. When we believe things that are not real and attach our identity to them and allow this imaginary idea to determine our worthiness, how valuable we are, we create our own unnecessary pain and suffering. We are nothing more, nothing less. We are not an idea or a notion. When we accept ourselves 100%, without attaching anything extra to our being, we are at peace with ourselves and others. We are free and are not chained to ideas or notions.
